In the hazy dawn of September 3, 1609, explorer Henry Hudson and his crew, aboard the Half Moon, found themselves unexpectedly sailing into a magnificent river along the Atlantic coast. They had been originally tasked with a northeast voyage but were met with relentless headwinds and storms. Faced with the prospect of returning to Holland empty-handed, the crew decided to embark on a quest for the elusive Northwest Passage—a legendary route said to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Their journey brought them past the island now known as Manhattan as they ascended the river.
